Freedom of drivers

These are pragmatic reasons that people give when you ask them why they prefer the car even if the destination could also be reached on foot or by public transport. It would be quicker and more practical, say more than three out of five Germans, according to a survey by the Allensbach Institute last year. Now this may not only be true in sparsely populated rural regions, but also for commuters who only reach their workplace in the city using public transport after changing trains several times. What is striking, however, is that a motive that plays an important role in the political debate over cars – that of freedom – is almost never mentioned in such surveys.
