The American ambassador to Angola, Tulinabo Mushingi assured, this Thursday, 6th, in Luanda, that his government supports the application of “minimum basic democratic” principles in Angola but cannot dictate rules on how the government “should do this ”.

The American diplomat made these statements to Voice of America during a press conference in what can be understood as a response to the application of freedom of expression and demonstration and the implementation of local authorities.

“Each country must decide which path to follow within the minimum basic principles that we agree on, such as freedom of the press, the freedom to have political parties, the organization of elections in the country”, stated the American ambassador.

When asked about the supposed imposition of 100 years of land occupation as a condition for American businesspeople to invest in the agricultural sector, Tulinabo Mushingi also argued that his country’s investments in Angola should be based on “bilateral agreements that satisfy both parties” .

“It’s a partnership and not one side dictating rules to the other side. If we agree, we will sign it, but the United States is not the one imposing this partnership,” she assured.

During the press conference, the American ambassador summarized the recent meeting between the president, João Lourenço and Joe Biden, stating that the meeting “ended a truly historic year and an opportunity to talk about the future of the US-Angola partnership”.

The American diplomat minimized the presence of investors from other countries in the Lobito Corridor, saying there was room for everyone.

He expressed rejoicing with Angola’s position in relation to the war in Ukraine and between Israel and Hamas, stating that it was a stance that aims to “help peace in the world”.
