French companies threatened by a Russian bill aimed at nationalizing them

DECRYPTION – This bill, about to be voted on, aims to appoint “external” administrators at the head of Western companies, including French ones, tempted to leave Russia. With a risk, in the long term, of nationalizing them.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged on Wednesday, before the French Parliament, French companies “Renault, Auchan, Leroy Merlin and others” to leave the Russian market, accusing them of being “sponsors of the Russian war machine”.

But while France is the first foreign employer in the country, and one of the first foreign investors in Moscow, this choice constitutes a real dilemma for French companies present in Russia. And this, even more so since Moscow has considered several legislative measures to dissuade any Western company from leaving the country.

Among these measures emerged, at the beginning of March, the threat of a “nationalization» assets of Western companies abandoning their facilities in Russia. As early as March 4, First Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Belousov declared that a variant of the accelerated bankruptcy procedure for foreign companies closing their production in Russia was under discussion.
