The Constitutional Council of France, the group responsible for overseeing the application of the Constitution in the country, approved most of the pension reform text. The decision allows the measure to be enacted in the coming days and take effect immediately.

According to council members, the new rule is in compliance with the Magna Carta. And the means used by the French president, Emmanuel Macron, to approve it were legal.

Macron authorized the reform without the approval of the National Assembly — equivalent to Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies — using Article 49.3 of the Constitution. Six articles needed to be removed from the original document.

The Constitutional Council of France must decide on the constitutionality of a second proposed pension referendum on May 3. The first text, presented by the opposition, was rejected.
