In a statement to the public, the Frente Amplio reacted to the reopening of the Antel Arena construction case, which had been closed by prosecutor Alejandro Machado, who spoke of the alleged existence of “sloppiness” and “wasteful management of resources”, but determined that these actions did not constitute crimes.
The Broad Front sees pressure on Justice from President Luis Lacalle Pou and his government. “After news of the file became known, the President of the Republic spoke publicly on several occasions in favor of reexamining the issue. Based on these statements, the Antel Board of Directors asked the Prosecutor’s Office to re-examine the case, the FA said in a statement posted on its official website.
“This Thursday the 2nd we learned from the media that the Prosecutor’s Office has decided to reexamine the Antel Arena case, at the request of the company’s Board of Directors,” added the left-wing political force.
The FA once again reiterated “confidence” in the work of the Attorney General’s Office, and continued to criticize Lacalle Pou’s intervention in this process: “it is very inconvenient for democratic institutions that the President of the Republic intercedes in a manner such that it can be understood as pressure on the people and organizations that must make decisions on the issues that are once again being put under study by the Prosecutor’s Office, after the case was archived.”
The FA sees a political intention
They also see an aggravating factor in the fact that this happens when the presidential campaign is taking place, and Carolina Cosse, who was president of Antel during its construction, is one of the candidates of the leftist political force, inferring that there is a political intention in the Lacalle’s position and his insistence that the case be reopened.
“We regret that in Uruguay what we have seen in several electoral campaigns in various parts of the world is happening: judicialization as a strategy to affect the image of candidates,” the FA continued.
He concluded his statement by highlighting Antel’s achievements during the governments of Tabaré Vázquez and José Mujica, “which led the telecommunications company to be a leader in the sector.”
“Uruguay has a solid Internet service that is an example worldwide and that allowed us to face challenges such as teleworking and remote study during the pandemic and that represents a platform for building the future. We reaffirm our commitment to continue on the path of building a better democracy for all Uruguayans,” the statement ends.
