Fresh meat is paler, and if it is very red, it means it has been treated in some way, revealed the director of a pig farm.

According to him, logistics do not allow fresh imported meat to be brought into Bulgaria.

“The main part of the meat comes from the European Union. The trucks travel about 3-4 days, for example, from Spain,” he added.

“The trend in recent years is that the Bulgarian first pork production cannot satisfy the demand of the large processing enterprises and unfortunately the import is a fact,” said Dr. Lubomir Kulinski, director of the Food Control Directorate, BBAH to BNT .

He explained that the pork in Bulgaria arrives from EU member countries – Poland, Romania, Spain.

“The problem is that pork meat is not Bulgarian, as well as beef. Bulgarian chicken meat satisfies more than 90 percent of consumption on the Bulgarian market, there are even exports to established countries such as Austria, Switzerland, Serbia and North Macedonia. Bulgarian pork meat on our market is below 50%. The control in the slaughterhouses is daily, the humane treatment of the animals, the hygiene during slaughter, the temperatures of the refrigerators, the expedition are monitored, the accompanying documents of the meat are very important, without them the control becomes very difficult,” said Dr. Lubomir Kulinski.
