Munich – Frida Karlsson shocked Swedish winter sports fans: The cross-country skiing star has revealed his plan to end his career in 2027, at the age of 27. That’s what Karlsson said to the Swedish medium The Express. Karlsson had already thought about ending his career.

Everything should be over in spring 2027. “Yes, that’s what I planned,” she confirms. With this concrete plan, her heart feels lighter: “I like having deadlines. Then I work best. It’s always been that way since I went to school.”
She has achieved almost everything in her career. With her ten World Championship medals, the cross-country skier is already one of the best athletes in Swedish ski history at the age of 24. She won bronze at the Olympics in Beijing in 2022.
Home World Cup in Falun as a big conclusion to Frida Karlsson’s career?
So it will be over in three years, this is “a bit of the plan”, but the farewell is not yet set in stone. There are big competitions coming up in the coming years: In spring 2027, the Nordic World Championships await at home in Falun as the end point of a three-year championship cycle with the World Cup in Trondheim (2025) and the Olympic Games in Milan (2026).

The final point in Falun “motivates me so much – to be able to write this story in Falun.” Yes. Karlsson says there is “more to life. I want to do so much – even if I don’t know exactly what I want to do.”

An office job is out of the question for her. “I feel like I’ll never be able to sit in an office. I think I need a lot of stimulation.” It cannot be ruled out that she will simply change her sport. She has already thought about trail running. “It can be anything!”
Her colleague Stina Nilsson also switched from cross-country skiing to biathlon. Karlsson thinks it’s “really cool.” She says, “I can really see myself in her thoughts.” She talks about a dopamine rush she would get from switching sports and a “new, super clear goal.” Karlsson advises: You shouldn’t just follow norms.

But it is also true that many cross-country skiers only reach their peak after they turn 30. Former Norwegian superstar Petter Northug finds Karlsson’s move “surprising”. he told the station TV2he is unsure whether Karlsson will actually go through with the plan.
