When Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was recently detained by ED, he had switched off his personal iPhone. Also, he had refused to tell the password to ED, but when ED sought help from Apple in this regard, the company refused to give any data. Apple said that it is necessary to enter the passcode to access the iPhone’s data. After this the debate on privacy has started once again.

This is not the first time Apple has done this. Even before this, many such cases have come to light when Apple had refused to share the data of iPhone owners.

The phone of the killer of Americans-

In 2020, Mohammed Saeed Al Shamrani, a Saudi Air Force officer, allegedly killed three Americans at the Pensacola Naval Air Station. When America’s investigative agency FBI contacted Apple regarding this, the company refused to unlock the device. However, some data of iCloud Backup and bank account transactions was definitely given.

San Bernardino incident-
There was also an attack in San Bernardino in 2015 and the FBI had also contacted Apple for the data of the iPhones of its accused Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik. The FBI had asked Apple to find a solution. Because after entering the wrong password 10 times in the iPhone, its data gets deleted, but Apple had refused to do so citing citizen rights. However, at many places the investigating agencies again took the help of hackers.

Why did Apple not give the data?
Apple said, ‘We never take the help of backdoors and we have always maintained this. Because the help of backdoor can also be taken by those who are a threat to national security. At the same time, we consider the data security of our customers above all else. We believe encryption is important for everyone. Americans had to choose between weakening encryption and solving the investigation.

The company’s policy states that if you want the data of your iPhone then the phone must be unlocked for this. Also, the device data will not be given to anyone by the company. If someone else asks for the data it can also be refused.
