Travel to a devastated country. The war that Israel is waging against Hamas is a “great fight of civilization” which is also “ours”, declared Monday in Tel Aviv Éric Zemmour, president of the far-right Reconquest party. “I come (…) to say [aux Israéliens] that their fight is ours, that it is a great fight of civilizations,” the former 2022 presidential candidate told a few journalists about the war triggered by the unprecedented attack launched by the Palestinian Islamist movement. Hamas against Israel on October 7.

Some 1,400 people have been killed on the Israeli side since October 7, mainly civilians massacred by Hamas commandos that day, according to the latest figures from the Israeli authorities, who have identified nearly 240 hostages kidnapped by Hamas and still captive in Gaza. In retaliation, the Israeli army has been relentlessly shelling the Gaza Strip, and has also been operating on the ground there since Friday evening.

More than 8,300 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed since the start of these bombings, according to the Health Ministry of Hamas, a movement described as a “terrorist organization” by Israel, the United States and the European Union.

“Two civilizations on the same soil” in France

After meeting the family of a Franco-Israeli soldier, Nathan Lyard, killed on October 7, and relatives of an Israeli hostage held in Gaza, Mr. Zemmour accused the people who demonstrated in France in support of the Palestinians of to be “in favor of Hamas and what it has done”. Mr. Zemmour also deplored the military support provided by Israel to Azerbaijan.

According to several experts, this support was crucial in Azerbaijan’s lightning military victory in September in Nagorno-Karabakh, a separatist enclave mainly populated by Armenians and which has been emptied of its inhabitants since then. He also criticized President Emmanuel Macron, at the head, according to him, “of a country which has two peoples, a French people of old stock and a new Islamo-leftist people”. “The tragedy of Mr. Macron and especially of France is that there are two civilizations on the same soil and there cannot be two civilizations on the same soil,” insisted the polemicist.
