From a childhood spent in a squat near Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, to commanding the kitchens of Aspen, Colorado, Mawa McQueen’s story is a testament to ambition and resilience. The award-winning chef, restaurateur, and media personality—appearing on programs like Good Morning America and Today Present—has built a culinary empire from the ground up. McQueen recently shared her remarkable journey, from humble beginnings to the pinnacle of American fine dining, during a visit to Paris, detailing a path forged through relentless work and a singular focus on success.
McQueen’s ascent isn’t a tale of overnight fame, but a carefully constructed climb. She describes her early aptitude for cooking not as a passion initially, but as a natural talent—a skill honed out of necessity while raising siblings in challenging circumstances. “You have to go towards those who succeed,” she explained in an interview with 20 Minutes, “But you have to do the work to get there, so take the step towards that world.” This pragmatic approach, coupled with an unwavering determination, became the foundation of her future.
From Trappes to Saint-Germain-en-Laye: Building a Foundation
Born near Abidjan, McQueen’s family relocated to Trappes, France, when she was twelve years old. As the eldest of twenty children, responsibility came early, including the daily task of preparing meals. She pursued her education at a hotel school, earning a diploma, but faced initial hurdles in finding employment. Undeterred, McQueen set her sights on leaving Trappes, recognizing the demand to learn from those with different experiences. “It wasn’t that I didn’t like the people I was with,” she said, “but I wanted to learn from those who didn’t resemble me. I knew that if I didn’t do anything, I would stay there my whole life.”
A pivotal opportunity arose working as a nanny for a family in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, a more affluent town in the Yvelines region. This experience proved invaluable, providing both emotional and cultural enrichment. It was during this time that McQueen began to refine her vision and solidify her ambition, realizing that her goals extended far beyond her immediate surroundings.
The Allure of Aspen and a Serendipitous Discovery
The United States became McQueen’s ultimate destination, and she strategically prepared for the move, focusing on improving her English language skills. A stint as an au pair in London provided that foundation, followed by a stroke of luck—winning the American Green Card lottery in 2001. “That’s when my professional life really began,” she stated.
Aspen, Colorado, still, wasn’t a deliberate choice initially. It was a surprising destination inspired by an unlikely source: the daytime soap opera The Young and the Restless. While living in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, McQueen watched an episode featuring a character visiting Aspen, and the picturesque mountain town captured her imagination. “It was magical, I fell in love with it,” she recalled.
A Recipe for Success: Talent, Resilience, and Discipline
McQueen’s decision to pursue Aspen over more conventional culinary hubs like New York was strategic. She recognized the opportunity to immerse herself in an environment populated by a wealthy clientele. “I had to blend in, and learn, because I wanted to succeed and become rich. In Aspen, I was with millionaires and billionaires, it was the best way,” she explained. In 2002, she began honing her skills in five-star restaurants in Maine, before following seasonal work to Aspen.
By 2015, McQueen had established her first venture, Mawa’s Kitchen, which received a recommendation from the Michelin Guide. Her innovative cuisine, including the now-famous “Bougie Crêpe” – a decadent creation featuring salmon and caviar priced at $180 – has garnered significant attention. Despite her success, McQueen acknowledges the setbacks she faced along the way. “The difficult times shaped me. I sometimes lost a lot of money, but I dreamed big enough not to give up. The United States taught me to be a fighter, to not accept failure,” she confided.
Passing it On: Mentorship and a New Book
McQueen is now focused on sharing her experiences and inspiring the next generation through seminars and her book, Une ambition sans limite (An Unstoppable Ambition). Influenced by figures like Oprah Winfrey and Daniel Boulud, she aims to provide guidance and mentorship. Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple: “Seek and identify your talent, and cultivate resilience and discipline. Instead of chasing your dreams, chase your talent.”
McQueen believes her success is opening doors for others. “The next Black person who goes to Aspen will have an easier time succeeding because I went through it,” she stated. She hopes to see a future where success stories from the suburbs are not the exception, but the norm.
Mawa McQueen’s story is far from over. She continues to expand her culinary footprint and inspire others with her unwavering determination. Her next venture will be a series of masterclasses aimed at young chefs, details of which will be announced on her official website in the coming weeks.
