“The experience of last year’s elections, when a fire broke out in one of the election precincts, showed that while preparing for the elections, we also need to think about actions in the event of a possible disaster. After consulting with the police officers, we prepared an action plan and introduced it to the election commissions, so that everyone knows how to act if we receive malicious threats about planted explosives,” commented CEC Chairperson Lina Petronienė on the security aspects of the preparation for the elections.

According to her, such preparation was also caused by the indications of law enforcement authorities about possible provocations during the elections.

The recommendations were prepared in cooperation and consultation with Lithuanian police officers, based on the practice acquired last fall, when general education institutions received threatening messages about planted explosives.

They are adapted for people working in elections. Also provided are tips on how to behave in the event of a fire in the polling station, in the event of a loss of electricity or internet at the polling place.

“We are preparing seriously so that we can react calmly in case of need”, stated the chairperson of the CEC, admitting that she would most like to avoid having to use these recommendations.

The election of the President of the Republic and the referendum on the preservation of citizenship will be held on May 12. Elections to the European Parliament – June 9.
