Last week the Miskolc Campus Forum Green and Smart conference was held at the University of Miskolc.

At this conference, attended by high-calibre guests, with many students and partners from business in the auditorium, everything revolved around the aspects of sustainability – in ecological, economic and social terms. The forum was organized by the university, the students and Dr. Marie-Theres Thiell as a member of the board of trustees of the university’s supporting foundation.

Their goal was to position the university among Hungary’s educational institutions on the topic of sustainability. The model was the Campus Symposium organized by students from the private university “International School of Management” in Dortmund, which Minister of Justice Judit Varga attended two years ago at the invitation of DialogHungary.

Multidisciplinary courses for promising solutions

Minister Judit Varga, former Chair of the Board of Trustees of the University Foundation and co-initiator of the forum, opened the day and emphasized the importance of the university for the region. She underlined that the University of Miskolc offers numerous multidisciplinary courses for promising solutions to sustainability issues.

In the subsequent conversation with Dr. Marie-Theres Thiell explained to János Áder, former President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the “Blue Planet” climate foundation, how active Hungary is with numerous measures to improve water quality.

“A large part of the water that comes into our country via the rivers from neighboring countries leaves it cleaner than it came in,” emphasized the committed promoter of sustainable water management. He also underlined that the problems related to too much or too little water will increase in the future, for which compensating solutions need to be worked out.

Investments in network infrastructure

Deputy Energy Minister Dr. In the panel, Zsófia Koncz described Hungary’s path to climate-neutral power generation and underlined the importance of solar energy. “We will invest in grid infrastructure and storage technologies for the implementation and expansion of renewable energies,” she promised.

Business representatives Ákos Hegedűs (Linde Gaz Hungary), József Goldfárth (MOL Group), Chairman of the Board of Trustees László Fükő (Robert Bosch Power Tool Kft.) and Dr. Robert Balla (Foldana Kft.) then discussed – moderated by Lóránd Hornyák, project manager at the university – with State Secretary Dr. Anikó Raisz different aspects of sustainability.

The conference was supported, among others, by the MOL Group, Foldana Kft. and the business network DialogHungary, whose representatives spoke the laudations for the winners of the sustainability awards.

Sustainability awards in three categories

These prizes were awarded in three categories. This is how Dr. József Goldfárth honored the waste recycling company MIREHU Nonprofit Kft. in the category “Ecological Sustainability”. The economically stable Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County Hospital was founded by Dr. Arne Gobert awarded for “economic sustainability”. Finally, for its commitment to the disabled, the Szimbiózis Foundation received from Dr. Robert Balla an award for “social sustainability”.

All winners come from the Miskolc region. “With the award ceremony, the university wants to express its solidarity with the partners in the region,” explained Dr. Marie Theres Thiell. The prizes – produced individually by the students of the university – have a high ideal value. “With this conference, the university has created an annual event,” she continued. Their motto is “From the university for the university” and “The city and the region”.

The program ended with students from the university and secondary school students being recognized as sustainability ambassadors for their work.
