THE European Union it must be ready to accept new members by 2030, according to the draft speech of the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, which he is to deliver on Monday in Slovenia.

“If we want them to trust us, we have to talk about the timeline. As we prepare the EU’s next strategic agenda, we must set a clear goal, we must be ready for enlargement,” says the document cited by the FT, among others.

The Belgian politician will speak at the forum in Bled in front of an audience that will include leaders of candidate countries for membership of the community – Moldova, Albania, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Referring to the issue a few days ago from Athens, Michel characteristically noted “The Western Balkans, Ukraine and Moldova have a common European heritage, history and future. Enlargement remains a top priority for the European Union, a powerful tool for promoting peace, security and prosperity on our continent. We must find the way forward to make this vision of Europe a reality.”

EU leaders will hold their first dedicated debate on the issue in the Spanish city of Granada in early October.

It is recalled that on February 28, 2022, the president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed an application for the country’s accession to the European Union. EU Heads of State and Government at their summit in Brussels on 23 June 2022 approved the granting of candidate country status to Ukraine and Moldova.
