The District Governor, Giorgos Hatzimarkos, made the following post on social media, about yesterday’s fire in Aithona:
The fire that broke out last night in the Aithona area of Rhodes was extremely difficult and dangerous.
The intervention and efficiency of the men of the Fire Brigade, reinforced this year with the new EMODE forest command unit, was exemplary. With the assistance, as always, of the forces of the Municipality and the Region, organized volunteer groups and ordinary citizens, the fire was controlled very quickly.
I have no words to describe the self-sacrifice of the men of the Fire Department and a big Thank You and our Congratulations is the least due.
No one can convince me that at this point and at 11 in the evening, it was not arson. Unfortunately, we are in an unequal battle with arsonists of all kinds. It is the second fire in a month in the same spot. The climate crisis is a given but our worst enemy remains the arsonist.
Congratulations again to all those who fought yesterday and of course, above all, to the Fire Brigade who yesterday gave us, in practice, an excellent first sample of its new operating doctrine.
