DIG/ Rich country, poor people.

With one of the highest per capita incomes on the continent, 1/3 of the Gabonese population (600,000 people) still lives below the poverty line.

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (IEP), celebrated every October 17, once again reminded the new authorities of the growing impoverishment of populations.

On this occasion, the Minister of Commerce, small and medium-sized enterprises, responsible for income-generating activities, Patricia Djipano-Mouloungui painted the picture of this fight through the theme “Reform Institutions to better guarantee the dignity of populations”.

According to her, Gabon’s strategy aims to propose measures having a positive long-term impact on the daily lives of populations.

These include universal health insurance, family allowances, support for income-generating activities, free transport in Greater Libreville, and support for the fight against the high cost of living.

But also, subsidies on fuel and gas, construction of roads, schools, hospitals and social housing as well as water supply works with the support of technical and financial partners .

« MDespite the efforts made and the numerous riches that abound in our country, the poverty rate is increasing and stands at 34% of the population, according to figures from the World Bank.

The rate of unemployed people stands at 22% of the population.

Added to this, without limitation, are the difficulties linked to the rising costs of basic necessities, access to quality care as well as access to drinking water. »indicated the minister.
