Antonio Garamendi will be able to continue leading the CEOE from 2026. The president, re-elected for the second time on November 23, has activated the machinery to reform the statutes of the large employers’ association and eliminate the current rule that limits two consecutive terms the presidencies, which gives him access to run for a third party in three and a half years. This prohibition was approved before he came to office, when Juan Rosell was still president.

The Basque leader summoned all the vice-presidents of the business organization this Thursday to consult them about this decision that he does not expect to find resistance and, foreseeably, will be approved at the board of directors that will be held next July, according to sources from sources confirmed to this newspaper. the CEOE.

Garamendi assures that he does it to “adapt the statutes” in line with the vast majority of business organizations, since more than 85% do not have the presidency restricted to eight years, and because various employers have requested it. Thus, none of the sectoral organizations is prohibited from running for a third term, nor large territorial organizations such as Andalusia, Castilla y León, nor associations such as the self-employed, ATA; the bank employers’ association, AEB; that of the farmers, Asaja; the insurance company, Unespa; that of young entrepreneurs, Ceaje… Nor does it apply to European employers’ associations, as the current president argues. However, this decision is generating some discomfort in some sectors, among his critics, who already denounced just before his re-election that he intended to carry it out.

In any case, Garamendi assures that he still does not know if he will run for that third term. He is not considering it, for the moment, since he still has more than three years ahead of him. Before he wants to wait to see how he is, consult with his family, with the vice presidents and observe the degree of consensus that he generates. But at least that door will be open if he so wishes and, if he receives enough support, he will be able to continue leading the business until 2030.

Change in deadlines

But before this proposal to reform the Statutes must go through the Internal Regime Commission, the Committee and the Board of Directors, and be approved in the General Assembly, according to sources from the business organization. If there is no opposition or more urgent issues arise, it could be brought to the Board of Directors this month and approved at the General Assembly that the CEOE plans to hold on July 19.

And it may not be the only change to be made to the bylaws. Garamendi also wants to modify the term to present himself as a candidate for the presidency, to set it at least one month in advance before the elections and not 15 days as is the case now, according to what they told this newspaper.
