García Montero inaugurates a new headquarters of the Cervantes Institute in Türkiye in Ankara

The new office of the Spanish Cultural Institute is based at the private university of Baskent, an institution with 1,700 teachers and about 17,000 students.

The Cervantes in Ankara, which will depend on an institute established in Istanbul, will offer not only Spanish classes, but also workshops and seminars, as well as cultural initiatives to promote the Spanish language and culture.

«Spanish culture and Cervantes represent peace and mutual understanding. Turkey has a fascinating history and great geopolitical importance,” García Montero said in statements to EFE during the inauguration ceremony.

“The friendship of the two countries coincides with our objectives of peace and mutual understanding,” concluded the director of Cervantes.

For his part, the founder of Baskent University, Mehmet Haberal, spoke of a “historic day” for his institution and highlighted the importance of culture for the academic world.

«Spain holds a special place in my heart. The collaboration of our university and the Cervantes Institute is very important,” added the head of the Baskent university.

Ankara, capital of Turkey since 1923, has six million inhabitants and hosts around twenty Spanish-speaking embassies, which will facilitate the organization of cultural activities in this new Cervantes headquarters.

Baskent University was established in 1994 and offers technical and scientific degrees, but also humanities and cultural degrees.

The institution has twelve faculties, a music conservatory, a language school and twenty research centers.

García Montero will travel tomorrow, Thursday, to Istanbul where he will participate in the presentation of the book at the Cervantes Institute Sínora. History of the border of Europe and the people who live thereby Spanish journalist Andrés Mourenza, former EFE collaborator in Turkey and Greece.
