Maryland’s Yarden Garzon Named to Cheryl Miller Award Watch List

A standout transfer is already making waves for the University of Maryland. Senior Yarden Garzon of the 10th-ranked Maryland women’s basketball team was named to the prestigious Cheryl Miller Award Watch List on Wednesday by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

The Cheryl Miller Award, now in its ninth year, recognizes the top small forwards in NCAA Division I women’s college basketball. The award is named in honor of Cheryl Miller, a three-time Naismith Player of the Year and a 1995 inductee into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

Garzon enters the season as a Preseason All-Big Ten selection, bringing a decorated resume to College Park. Before joining the Terrapins, she spent three seasons at Indiana University, where she earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors. Last year, Garzon led the Hoosiers in scoring, averaging 14.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. She showcased her exceptional shooting ability, leading the Big Ten with 88 three-pointers made and ranking second in the conference with a 40.7% three-point percentage.

During her time at Indiana, Garzon established herself as a program icon, becoming the all-time leader in both three-pointers made (220) and three-point percentage (42.6%) in just three years.

Terrapins Poised for Strong Big Ten Run

Maryland is predicted to finish second in the Big Ten Conference, trailing only UCLA in preseason rankings. The Terrapins return a core of experienced players, including All-Big Ten honorees Kaylene Smikle, Bri McDaniel, and starter Saylor Poffenbarger.

Head coach Brenda Frese and her staff have bolstered the roster with key additions. In addition to Garzon, Maryland has welcomed Oluchi Okanwa, the 2025 ACC Tournament Most Outstanding Player from Duke, via the transfer portal. A talented group of freshmen – It’s Bartelme, Addi Mack, Rainey Welson, Nicole Fritea, and Marya Boiko – will also compete for playing time.

Upcoming Games for Maryland Women’s Basketball

The Terrapins will begin their season with an exhibition game against Division II Point Park on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the XFINITY Center. Admission to the game is free, and fans can watch the action on B1G+.

Maryland’s regular season opener is scheduled for Monday, November 3, at 7 p.m. against Loyola (Md.) at the XFINITY Center. Tickets for the game are currently available, and the game will also be streamed on B1G+.
