Grenoble Gas Leak Prompts Urgent Evacuations, Ongoing Repairs

A gas leak detected Friday afternoon in Grenoble, France, triggered the urgent evacuation of over 200 residents and a large-scale emergency response. Authorities are working to contain the leak, with repairs expected to continue into the night.

The alert regarding the gas leak came around 2 p.m. on December 26th at 38 rue Ampère. Traffic was immediately halted as emergency services prioritized the safety of those living in nearby buildings. The City of Grenoble confirmed the incident stemmed from abnormally high gas measurements detected near a buried pipe.

Containment and Evacuation Efforts

Firefighters from the departmental fire and rescue service (Sdis) of Isère quickly established a containment perimeter spanning approximately 100 meters around the affected area. A more focused evacuation zone, extending 50 meters in radius, saw 119 apartments cleared of residents. In total, 112 residents were initially asked to evacuate, with many taking their animals with them.

“The safety of residents is our top priority,” a senior official stated. “We are working diligently to resolve this situation as quickly and safely as possible.”

Repair Operations Underway

Technicians from Greenalp, the local gas and electricity distributor, and NaTran, a high-pressure gas transport operator, are on-site conducting the necessary repairs. Work to plug the leak could not begin until the complete evacuation of the area was confirmed.

The City of Grenoble activated a crisis unit to manage the response and provide support to those displaced. Evacuees were informed of available resources, with some finding shelter with family and friends. Others were directed to the Adolphe Pégoud gymnasium, which was opened with the assistance of the Red Cross, offering camp beds and blankets. The Joseph-Vallier nursery school served as a reception and information center, staffed by municipal agents.

Ongoing Situation and Public Advisory

As of late afternoon Friday, the containment and evacuation measures remained in effect. Authorities are urging local residents to respect the established blockades and stay informed through official municipal channels or by calling 04 76 76 34 51. The duration of the repairs remains uncertain, but officials anticipate work will continue for a portion of the night.
