The repair work of Summit’s LNG terminal, which was damaged by Cyclone Rimal at Maheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar, has not yet been completed. As a result, it will take another week to normalize gas supply in the country.

On Wednesday (July 31) at noon, Bangladesh, Oil Gas and Mineral Resources Corporation (Petrobangla) Director (Operations and Mines) Engineer Md. Kamruzzaman Khan informed this information.

He said that the gas supply from Summit Group’s LNG terminal has been stopped as the repairs have not been completed. It will take another seven to eight days to activate. After that it will be possible to supply gas from that LNG terminal. However, LNG continues to be supplied through the terminal of US company Accelerate Energy.

Kamruzzaman Khan said, the sea weather is not good now. So, can’t work. It will take more time. If the sea is rough, the water becomes cloudy. Then it is not possible to work under water. It may take seven to eight days or more to fully heal.

According to Petrobangla, only 600 million cubic feet of gas is being supplied per day through Accelerate Energy’s terminal due to the closure of Summit’s LNG terminal. Another 2,000 million cubic feet of gas is available daily from domestic sources in the country. But, there is a total demand of 3 thousand 100 million cubic feet of gas per day. There is a shortage of about 500 to 600 million cubic feet of gas every day.

On July 26, Summit’s LNG terminal was damaged by Cyclone Rimal. After necessary repairs in Singapore, it returned to the country on July 10. After that, gas was supposed to be supplied on July 17, but it was not possible. Later, on July 29 and 30, Petrobangla officials announced that it was operational However, due to inclement weather, repairs are not possible, so we have to wait for a few more days.
