In the first half of the year, the sale of electric cars has increased, however, it has only reached a market share of just 5%, while plug-in hybrids have remained below 7%. Gasoline vehicles dominate the market with a registration share of 43%.

These are the latest figures that highlight the growing weight of non-plug-in hybrid vehicles in registrations. These cars are gaining ground by leaps and bounds, offering an attractive solution for those looking for more sustainable mobility without compromising comfort and versatility when traveling.

«We at service stations have been noticing for years that vehicles are becoming more energy efficient, the elimination of lead, as well as engines with more gears, are advances in combustion engines that make them more sustainable and cause less consumption, and, Therefore, these advances have already translated into fewer gasoline sales,” reveals Manel Montero, CEO of Grupo Moure.

According to the Spanish Association of Petroleum Products Operators (AOP) «Our vehicle fleet is one of the oldest in Europe, with an average age of over 13 years. More than 95% are combustion engines, that is, they run on gasoline or diesel. This means, according to this organization, that almost all drivers are required to invest in an electric vehicle for which, until now, “there are not even enough charging points nor does it offer sufficient autonomy for long journeys.” A particularly relevant factor for the inhabitants of rural and empty Spain.

According to the Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (ANFAC) Spain must multiply its high-power charging network by five to achieve the new emissions reduction objectives for 2023. For José López-Tafall, general director of ANFAC, «the objectives established by the European Union are not met by effort alone of the sector, but they require a great effort on the part of the rest of the actors, a commitment from the Government and the Administrations to be able to carry out the transformation of mobility, and in parallel, maintain the weight of employment and industry that the automotive supposes«.

The Manufacturers Association considers that the automotive industry is leading decarbonization and is already putting a wide range of electrified vehicles on the market. «However, we are faced with increasingly demanding emissions reduction targets and, therefore, it is necessary to establish tools that match these ambitions. The development of publicly accessible charging infrastructure is essential for the deployment of the electrified vehicle. But, in the same way, we cannot forget that encouraging the electrified market is equally necessary for progress in the public charging network,” says López-Tafall.

Non-plug-in hybrids beat electric ones

During these first six months of the year, the sale of electric cars has increased, however, they have only reached a market share of barely 5%, while plug-in hybrids have remained below 7%, that is, in the Overall, models with zero DGT label have only represented 12% of new sales in Spain, according to Anfac data.

This Association has also highlighted how the development of a publicly accessible charging infrastructure network with sufficient capillarity and quality is essential for the progressive decarbonization of transport.

«This deficit is due to the fact that the user is limited in terms of freedom, since to decide where he wants to go he must take into account the charging points available to him during the journey, a factor that represents a problem due to the deficit. of charging infrastructure that still exists for electric cars in some areas,” says the general director of Moure Group.

Space reserved for recharging FP electric vehicles

According to the latest ANFAC electromobility barometer for the first quarter of 2023, Spain continues to remain at the bottom of the European ranking, with slow progression in the market for electrified vehicles and the development of publicly accessible charging infrastructure. The association highlights that to achieve the minimum objectives proposed in line with the demands of Fit for 55, it is necessary to implement new and effective measures that promote electrification in Spain.

Gasoline dominates the market

On the other side of the coin, gasoline vehicles continue to dominate the market with a registration share of 43%, while hybrid cars, which include microhybrids, have represented just over 30%. These data show that, although hybrid cars are gaining ground, they are still behind gasoline models in terms of consumer preference.

“The consumer opts for a hybrid because they can enjoy advantages such as being able to circulate without restrictions in many of our cities, free parking in numerous blue zones and tax advantages,” says Montero. “And all this while having the peace of mind that you will always be able to refuel at a gas station to continue your journey,” he continues.

As the years go by, it is undeniable that electric cars will position themselves at the center of the automotive revolution, setting a course towards sustainable mobility. Therefore, although the trend is still towards combustion vehicles and non-plug-in hybrids, the CEO of Grupo Moure highlights the importance of working on a hybrid business model at service stations. “At gas stations we must work on a business model where we can offer customers more services outside the pump, such as washing centers, vending machines, stores, among other services,” says Montero.
