The price of fuel is reluctant to give drivers a truce this summer and, at the gates of the bridge on August 15, gasoline and diesel are up again for the fifth consecutive week.

According to the European Union Oil Bulletin published this Thursday, a liter of gasoline costs an average of 1.68 euros in Spain after rising 1.8% in the last week, with which filling an average tank of 55 liters will be around 92 4 euro. The price is also the most expensive of all this year. And it is that you have to go back to the penultimate week of 2022 to see similar levels, when the price per liter was 1,688 euros.

After the recent rebound, filling the tank with gasoline is now more expensive than last year, in the midst of the energy crisis due to the conflict in Ukraine that made oil prices significantly more expensive, forcing the Government to take measures such as a 20-cent discount per liter.

In the same week of 2022, the liter of gasoline stood at an average of 1.860 euros which, applying the 20 cent discount that is currently not in force, meant that drivers ended up paying 1.66 euros, below current prices. .

A different situation occurs for diesel, which closed the week at an average of 1.55 euros per liter. So filling the tank will cost about 85.25 euros. The figure compares with the 1,654 euros in which the liter moved just a year ago, once the bonus was applied. Then, refueling at the gas station implied a cost of 90.97 euros, 5.72 euros more than now.

After this new rise, diesel adds 25 consecutive weeks below the price of gasoline. Thus, it remains in the usual situation before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which caused the price of diesel to be more expensive than gasoline continuously from August 2022 until mid-February of this year, when it broke. that dynamic.

It must be taken into account that the price of fuel depends on several factors, such as its specific price, taxes or the costs of raw materials and logistics. And also of the evolution of the oil price. Although this is not transferred directly -it does so with a certain time lag- the price of a barrel of Brent, a reference in Europe, has been hovering around 87 dollars for several days. A month ago it barely exceeded 77. And at the beginning of the year it was also trading at those levels.

In any case, the price of unleaded 95 gasoline in Spain remains below the average for the European Union, located at 1.801 euros per liter, and for the euro area, with an average price of 1.861 euros. In the case of diesel, the price in Spain is also lower than the EU average, which is 1,689 euros, and the euro zone, where it stands at 1,725 euros.
