Stopping to refuel at Spanish gas stations in the middle of the road trip season for the summer holidays is becoming an activity not suitable for the faint of heart. Fuels have already chained seven consecutive weeks of rises, which have led the price of gasoline to exceed the level of 1,709 euros, according to the latest oil bulletin from the European Commission.

They are not just highs of the year. The value is the highest since the end of August 2022, when the bonus of 20 cents per liter introduced by the Government was still in force after prices went out of control due to the energy crisis after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. The trend also consolidates the fuel above the prices before the conflict, at the end of February 2022, when they were around 1,594 euros per liter.

Specifically, filling an average 55-liter tank already costs 93.99 euros. That is to say, 6.76 euros more than in the same week just a year ago, when the liter stood at 1.586 euros at gas stations (87.23 euros for the deposit), once the discount in force until the end of last year was applied. anus.

Since the price hike began at the beginning of July, a liter of gasoline has become more expensive by almost 7.5%. And greater has been the rise in diesel, with a rebound of almost 11.5% in the period. Specifically, filling an average tank in this type of vehicle implies paying 88 euros (1,601 euros per liter), a level that has not been seen since the penultimate week of February.

In any case, diesel prices remain somewhat lower than those of twelve months ago, when the liter was around 1,616 euros once the discount was applied. At that time, filling the deposit meant an outlay of 88.88 euros. In any case, now it is still much more expensive than before the war, when it marked 1,479 euros.

Despite the strong rise in recent weeks, it must be borne in mind that fuel prices are still far from the highs they reached more than a year ago, when both gasoline and diesel easily exceeded 2.1 euros on average. However, the rise has been strongly felt in the pocket of consumers, in the middle of the summer season and, in the case of the last week recorded in the official data, coinciding with the return of the August long weekend, for which the DGT estimated 8.5 million displacements.

Precisely, this situation of greater demand during the summer months usually contributes to the rise in prices. A situation to which must now be added the rise in the price of the raw material, oil, which has grown strongly in recent weeks due to the recent cuts in production in Saudi Arabia. Specifically, a barrel of Brent is now at 85 dollars. At the beginning of the year, it was around $77.
