Stomach cancer remains a significant health concern in Korea, currently ranking as the fifth most common cancer diagnosed, according to the National Cancer Registration Statistics from 2023. While its incidence has decreased from its former position as the most prevalent cancer, it continues to affect a large population, particularly men in their 60s. A shift is also being observed, with an increasing number of cases occurring in the upper stomach, potentially linked to genetic factors and smoking. “The prognosis for upper stomach cancer is not good,” one expert noted.

Surgery remains the cornerstone of stomach cancer treatment, with gastrectomy – the removal of all or part of the stomach – being the most common approach for approximately 70-80% of patients. Professor Lee and his team conducted a comparative study involving 200 patients with stage 1 and 2 stomach cancer. Patients were divided into three groups: those undergoing laparoscopic surgery with a straight instrument, those using Articential, and those receiving robotic surgery. The results, completed last year, demonstrated comparable long-term survival rates – 94-95% for the Articential and robotic surgery groups, compared to 89% for the traditional laparoscopic group. Notably, surgical time was shortest in the Articential group, with no significant differences in bleeding volume across all three groups. “This proves that the treatment results are comparable to robotic surgery, which is considered the most precise,” Professor Lee stated.
