Geminis’ Starfall is at its peak: up to 120 meteors per hour

by time news

On the night of December 13-14, there will be a peak of the Geminid meteor shower, during which up to 120 meteors an hour are expected.

White without any shades “shooting stars” during the period of maximum activity of the Geminids are usually large and bright, and they cross the sky rather “slowly”. The low speed of flight of meteors is explained by the fact that they do not fly towards the Earth, but “catch up” with it. In combination with a large number of meteors, this allowed the starfall to be awarded the informal title of “most beautiful”.

This year, the moon close to the full moon will interfere with the observation of starfall even in the case of suitable weather conditions.

It is assumed that the meteor shower is associated with the asteroid Phaethon discovered in 1983.
