Gene Simmons on Ace Frehley’s Death: ‘Bad Decisions’

Gene Simmons Attributes Ace Frehley’s Death to ‘Bad Decisions’

A recent interview with Gene Simmons of Kiss has revealed his perspective on the October death of former bandmate Ace Frehley, attributing it to a pattern of “bad decisions.” Frehley, the iconic lead guitarist and founding member of the glam rock band, passed away at age 74 following injuries sustained in a fall, as confirmed by an autopsy conducted last month.

Autopsy Details and Family Statement

The Morris County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Frehley’s death an accident, citing facial fractures near his eyes and left ear, alongside bruising on his abdomen, thigh, hip, and upper thigh. Despite previously stating he had maintained sobriety for two decades, Simmons suggested Frehley resisted attempts by those close to him to address lifestyle concerns.

“He refused [advice] from people that cared about him – including yours truly – to try to change his lifestyle,” Simmons told the New York Post. “In and out of bad decisions. Falling down the stairs — I’m not a doctor — doesn’t kill you. There may have been other issues, and it breaks my heart. The saddest thing – you reap what you shall sow unfortunately.”

Frehley’s family released a statement emphasizing the peaceful circumstances surrounding his passing. “We cherish all of his finest memories, his laughter, and celebrate his strengths and kindness that he bestowed upon others,” the statement read. “The magnitude of his passing is of epic proportions, and beyond comprehension. Reflecting on all of his incredible life achievements, Ace’s memory will continue to live on forever!”

Kiss Reflects on Founding Member

The surviving members of Kiss, including Simmons and Paul Stanley, acknowledged Frehley’s significant contribution to the band’s legacy. In a joint statement, they described him as an “essential and irreplaceable rock soldier during some of the most formative foundational chapters of the band and its history.”

During their first concert since announcing their retirement from touring, Kiss paid tribute to Frehley. Stanley paused to ask the audience to remember the guitarist, acknowledging past differences while emphasizing their shared history. “We’re talking about Ace,” he said. “We certainly had differences, but that’s what family is about. Why don’t we take a moment [and] think about him looking down on us….Let’s have a moment for Ace.”

Prior Health Concerns and Tour Cancellations

Prior to his death, Frehley’s tour manager, John Ostrosky, announced a “minor fall” on September 25 via Facebook, leading to the cancellation of an upcoming tour date. A subsequent update on October 6 indicated the cancellation of all remaining 2025 dates due to “ongoing medical issues.” Frehley’s death was officially announced on October 17.
