Genesis to Enter Bulgaria: Models & Premium Car Market Growth

by Ahmed Ibrahim World Editor

The luxury automotive market in Bulgaria is poised for a new contender, as Genesis, Hyundai’s independent luxury brand, prepares to expand its European footprint to include the Balkan nation. The move, confirmed by Genesis Europe Managing Director Peter Kronschnabl, represents a shift in strategy from a gradual rollout to a more aggressive, simultaneous expansion across several key European markets.

Genesis, established as a distinct marque in 2015 after initially serving as Hyundai’s premium sedan line, has been steadily gaining traction globally. Last year, the brand reported over 221,000 vehicles sold worldwide, with 83,000 units delivered in the United States. While European sales reached a record 2,455 vehicles, they remain modest compared to other regions, signaling a significant growth opportunity. The Bulgarian market, experiencing a surge in premium vehicle registrations, presents an attractive prospect for the brand.

According to data from Automedia, the premium segment in Bulgaria has seen a remarkable increase, with nearly 6,400 new registrations in 2025, accounting for approximately 12% of the total new car market. This represents a 7.4% increase compared to 2024 and a substantial 93% jump from 2021, demonstrating a growing appetite for luxury vehicles within the country.

Kronschnabl’s confirmation of the accelerated expansion plan, following a presentation of the company’s annual results, indicates that Bulgaria could see Genesis vehicles on its roads as early as next year. The expansion already underway includes launches in France, Italy, and Spain, suggesting a coordinated effort to establish a strong presence across key European economies.

While an official announcement regarding the Bulgarian distributor is pending, Automedia reports that “Industrial Commerce,” Hyundai’s long-standing importer in Bulgaria, is the most likely candidate. However, the company has yet to issue a statement confirming its involvement.

Peter Kronschnabl, Genesis Europe Managing Director, previously held a vice president role at BMW Group, focusing on the development of new markets.

Genesis’s model lineup offers a range of vehicles poised to compete with established luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The GV60, an all-electric compact crossover debuting in 2021 and receiving a facelift in January of last year, has develop into a key driver of sales, accounting for 60% of European volume in 2023. The GV60 shares a platform with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. In Germany, pricing for the GV60 starts at €54,680, reaching up to €80,350 for the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive version, which boasts a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of just 4 seconds.

Beyond the GV60, Genesis offers a broader portfolio, including larger sedans and SUVs. The brand has also hinted at high-performance models, such as the X Skorpio, featuring a powerful V8 engine that will also underpin the future Magma GT. The G90 Wingback, currently a concept, showcases the brand’s design ambitions and potential for unique offerings.
