Each year, the Swiss National Day is celebrated on August 1, a Tuesday for this year 2023. So as Annecy is not far from Geneva, we invite you to discover the program of festivities.

Swiss National Day

Swiss National Day is celebrated on August 1 each year. It goes back to the oath taken by the cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden in 1291. The founding act of the Confederation, its objective was to set up an alliance and protect the borders of each canton. It is around these that the Switzerland we know today will be formed.

The 2023 edition in Geneva

The festivities will begin at 3 p.m. at La Grange park. You can enjoy various entertainment and shows, while tasting many culinary specialties and local drinks. The evening will be launched at 7 p.m., with an official ceremony. On this occasion, the founding act of the Swiss Confederation will be read and translated into sign language. An ecological and festive village will be opened for the occasion. You will find human-powered carousels, a carousel made of recycled materials or even wooden games and nature discovery workshops.

During the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to participate in eco-challenges implemented by the association Le Sablier de Cassandre, as well as to discover the vegetable garden of the Théâtre de l’Orangerie.

Practical information

This year, the event has been designed to be more respectful of the environment. For the first time this year and like the Fête du Lac d’Annecy, a carbon assessment will be carried out. Reusable and non-returnable dishes will also be offered.

In addition, one of the stages will be powered by solar energy and the movement of motorized vehicles on site has been limited. In the context of global warming and in view of the temperatures that can be reached during the summer, the places have been designed to maximize the shaded areas. As for the carnival, it will take place almost completely without electricity.
