Georgia State Breaks Ground on Historic Baseball Stadium, Honoring Hank Aaron’s Legacy

A new era of Georgia State University baseball is on the horizon, as the City of Atlanta officially approved the Land Disturbance Permit on November 18, 2025, clearing the way for construction of a $15.4 million baseball stadium. The facility promises to be a transformational addition to the university’s athletic portfolio and a catalyst for continued development in the Summerhill neighborhood.

A Landmark Project on Hallowed Ground

The new stadium will be built on the site of the former Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, a venue steeped in sports history. For decades, it served as the home of the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta Chiefs, and hosted the Peach Bowl, as well as Olympic baseball in 1996. Perhaps most famously, the stadium was the location of Hank Aaron’s record-breaking 715th home run on April 8, 1974 – a moment forever etched in baseball lore.

Georgia State is committed to honoring Aaron’s legacy, beginning with the relocation of the Hank Aaron statue from Center Parc Credit Union Stadium to the new baseball stadium’s main entrance. A commemorative marker will also be installed in left field, precisely marking the spot where Aaron’s historic home run landed, replacing the existing chain link fence and block wall.

Modern Amenities and Community Integration

Beyond paying tribute to the past, the new baseball stadium will boast modern amenities designed to elevate both the player experience and the fan experience. Plans include a turf playing surface, expanded dugouts, upgraded batting and bullpen facilities, state-of-the-art technology infrastructure, and improved seating and hospitality spaces.

The location, situated just steps from Center Parc Credit Union Stadium, the GSU Convocation Center, and Georgia State’s downtown campus, is intended to foster greater engagement with students, faculty, staff, and alumni. According to a senior official, “This stadium represents more than just a place to play baseball. It connects Georgia State to Atlanta’s sports legacy and creates a vibrant future for our program and community.”

Funding and Future Opportunities

Construction is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2026. Georgia State Athletics Director Charlie Cobb emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “We understand the importance of this project to many. It is exciting for us as well.”

The university is actively seeking additional financial contributions to expand the scope of the project, with numerous naming opportunities still available. Georgia State extends gratitude to the donors whose generosity has already made the project possible. Naming partners for the stadium and playing field will be announced pending approval from the University System of Georgia Board of Governors.

Georgia State recognizes the significance of this project for its community and supporters and will continue to share updates as construction progresses.
