Angela Merkel became the acting chancellor of Germany. Her term as chancellor has officially come to an end. FRG President Frank-Walter Steinmeier handed her a notice of this in Bellevue Palace, the residence of the head of state. Earlier, the president asked Angela Merkel to continue doing business until a successor is appointed.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier also handed similar notifications to Vice-Chancellor Olaf Scholz, ministers of the government of Mrs. Merkel and Minister of the Office of the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Helge Braun.
Parliamentary elections in Germany took place on September 26, 2021. According to their results, for the first time in 16 years without Angela Merkel, a new government will be formed.
