Germany: First prototype of digital driving license developed

by time news

Drivers can now create a digital version of their license that can be stored on their smartphone.

As Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer confirmed to Passauer Neue Presse, drivers can now create a digital version of their license that can be stored on their smartphone: “A digital driver’s license can greatly simplify the daily life of drivers,” Scheuer said.

To use digital rights, users need an ID Wallet app that can be downloaded from the respective app stores on Android and iOS devices, germania.one reports.

However, the current version is still a prototype. The big advantage of the digital version is that the often cumbersome check during rental or car sharing can become a thing of the past. At the same time, experts are also working to ensure that the digital copy can also be used as an official confirmation of a driver’s license, for example, during police checks, Scheuer said.

The smartphone driver’s license was developed by the road department in collaboration with the Federal Motor Transport Administration and the Federal Printing Office. The first possible applications for use will be, for example, BMW and Sixt, where you can rent cars or use car sharing offers. In the long term, digital driver’s licenses should be fully equivalent to the classic paper and plastic versions.
