Germany: German Air Force base turned into refugee camp

by time news

The transit camp for Afghan refugees at the US Air Force Base in Ramstein, Rhineland-Palatinate, has become a springboard for asylum applications in Germany.

Since the Taliban took over Kabul in mid-August, the United States has evacuated former local workers, allies and their families from Afghanistan. Since late August, they have been using their base in Ramstein as a transshipment camp for evacuation flights to the United States. To date, over 34,000 Afghans have arrived in Ramstein. More than 20,000 people are said to have already left the base. Nevertheless, today about 14,000 Afghans are still there. Most of them do not want to leave Germany.

The BILD has learned that at least 90 Afghans living in Ramstein have already applied for asylum in Germany. Other sources say the number of applications is growing every day. The submitted asylum applications are now the subject of a tangible dispute between Germany and the US Department of State, as well as the federal government. Because, according to the Foreign Office, Germany and the US government, prior to the opening of the transit camp (on German soil), agreed that everyone in need of protection would go to America or other countries.

On September 1, a spokesman for the German Foreign Office said: “In fact, this is an agreement with the United States that all persons arriving via Ramstein must leave Germany soon. There are corresponding obligations on the part of the United States. “
