Germany: Only 15% of residents believe the pandemic will end in 2022

by time news

Is that a pandemic in 2022 predominantly or completely completed, only about 15% of respondents in Germany are confident.

This was shown by a survey conducted by the YouGov Sociological Institute commissioned by the agency dpa, reports DW. At the same time, 79% of participants in the study believe that the coronavirus will continue to influence their lives at least partially in the next year. Another 34% expect the impact to be significant. A representative survey was conducted online from December 21 to 23. It was attended by 2061 people over 18 years old.

Thus, the sentiment turned out to be more skeptical than in 2020, when 26% of those surveyed believed that the pandemic would, to one degree or another, enter the end phase over the next year. As noted by dpa, such sentiments can at least partially be explained by the fact that at the time of the study – in December 2020 – a vaccination campaign had just begun in Germany.

The then Minister of Health of Germany, Jens Spahn (Jens Spahn) assured fellow citizens: “Autumn and winter next year will not pass under the sign of a pandemic.”

Germany’s seven-day average coronavirus infection rate rose slightly from the previous day. As previously reported by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), as of December 31, it amounted to 214.9 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants. A day earlier, the indicator value was 207.4 cases, and a week ago – 280.3 cases.

According to the RKI, 41,240 new cases of SARS-CoV-2 virus infection have been recorded over the past day. This is less than a week earlier, when the rate reached 44,927 cases. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 7,150,422 people have been infected with coronavirus infection, 6,352,600 people have been cured. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the country has recorded a total of 111,925 deaths associated with covid.

The RKI notes that data published on holidays and at the end of the year are usually below real indicators – due to fewer tests carried out and incomplete information from local health authorities.

German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach said he estimated that the country’s coronavirus infection rate is actually 2-3 times higher than official statistics suggest.
