Germany: Pandemic has left Dresden’s economy in dire straits

by time news

Experts had previously predicted a decline in the economic development of the city, but the coronavirus pandemic for Dresden turned out to be truly devastating.

This is confirmed by a study carried out by the Society for Market Research and Sales (GMA) on behalf of Friederike Wachtel from City Management Dresden eV. The study shows that the level of vacant commercial space in the city in the area of Hauptstrasse and Wiener Platz streets has increased dramatically, reports germania.one. Now more than 10% of the approximately 220,000 sq. m. of retail space are empty. And this is 93 stores. Another 370 stores in the city are still open.

The lockdown time was especially difficult for trade in the city. In March and April 2020, the city was visited by about 50% fewer tourists. Hotels were only 11% full, fairs and conventions were canceled. “There will be more bankruptcies soon,” said GMA director Eddie Donath. But not only the coronavirus is to blame for the current situation. “The center of Dresden outside of Neumarkt is still not attractive enough for tourists,” says Frederike Wachtel. According to her, the new street design is devoid of elegance, there is almost no green space, and the modern concept of parking spaces is still missing. Cars are still driving around the city center. The increase in parking fees is also viewed with skepticism.

According to experts, this is exactly where the city needs to start in order to prevent further loss of attractiveness. However, for example, on Wilsdrufer and Schweriner Strasse, premises will no longer be rented out to retailers.
