A severe winter storm has swept across Germany, resulting in at least four fatalities and widespread travel chaos. The frist major winter weather event of the season brought treacherous conditions – including snow and icy roads – leading to numerous accidents and significant disruptions to transportation networks on Monday, November 24.
Fatalities Reported Across Southern Germany
The hardest-hit regions appear to be in southern Germany. In Bavaria, a collision involving two trucks and a passenger car claimed the lives of three individuals, with police citing “extremely slippery road conditions” as a contributing factor. Two other people sustained serious injuries,and several more suffered moderate injuries in the same incident.
A separate tragedy unfolded in Baden-Wuerttemberg, where a 68-year-old man died after losing control of his vehicle on an icy road and colliding with another car.The driver of the second vehicle was seriously injured.
Hesse Experiences Multiple Accidents
Further north, in the central state of Hesse, emergency services responded to dozens of accidents caused by icy roads and overnight snowfall. Authorities reported nine people were injured, and more than 30 weather-related accidents occurred between Sunday night and Monday morning.
Widespread Disruptions and Ongoing Warnings
Other german federal states also reported scattered incidents and disruptions to both road and rail travel, though most were described as relatively minor.the german Weather Service has issued warnings indicating that severe conditions are expected to persist.
Forecasters predict icy conditions and light frost will continue in eastern regions tonight, with additional risks of ice developing in central and southern areas. Snowfall is anticipated in the Alps.
