It’s not entirely new, but there are a few changes. The government launched this Tuesday, April 25 its platform “To have for my taxes”. The goal: to show taxpayers what their money is for by detailing the cost of government services. The data, which is based on 2019 expenditure for 1,000 euros of public money, shows for example that 23 euros are spent on research, 95 on education or 572 on social protection.

The site also allows you to discover, in detail, that an intervention by the firefighters amounted to an average of 1,150 euros in 2021, that childbirth costs between 2,800 and 10,000 euros depending on the complications, that the organization of he presidential election costs 4.76 euros per voter or that the cost of a school year in the public primary school is 6,805 euros per pupil.

Convince and consult

It makes it possible to “give very concrete examples by explaining where the taxes go”, defended Gabriel Attal on RTL this Tuesday morning. Until now, there was already a similar site (called “What are my taxes used for?”) allowing you to find out how public money is used.

But the 2023 version presents a novelty, with the provision of a form allowing everyone to give their opinion on the amount of taxes and the perception that citizens have of them. This site is “also a consultation, so that the French can give their opinion. It is always useful to give the floor,” commented the Minister Delegate for Public Accounts. “We will look at the results and we will take them into account for the next budget”, assured Gabriel Attal on RTL.

He also repeated that there would be “no tax increase” until the end of Emmanuel Macron’s mandate. The 2022 tax return campaign started on April 13 for the country’s 39 million tax households.
