Astronomers have identified an enormous double-ring structure billions of light years away, a discovery that adds to the growing list of enigmatic Odd Radio Circles (orcs). These objects, first detected just six years ago, are characterized by their unusual shape and powerful radio emissions, and only a handful have ever been observed.This latest finding,detailed in a study published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal astronomical Society,is only the second ORC found to exhibit a double-ring structure.
These ORCs are believed to be composed of magnetized plasma and are typically found surrounding a galaxy. Their scale is immense, often exceeding the diameter of our own milky Way galaxy by dozens of times. Despite their size, the mechanisms behind their formation remain unknown, leading scientists to speculate they could be remnants of cataclysmic events from the early universe.
“ORCs are among the most bizarre and lovely cosmic structures we’ve ever seen – and they may hold vital clues about how galaxies and black holes co-evolve, hand-in-hand,” explained a study lead author, an assistant professor at the University of Mumbai’s department of atomic energy’s Center for Excellence in Basic Sciences.
Unveiling RAD J131346.9+500320
The newly discovered ORC, formally designated RAD J131346.9+500320, resides within a dense galaxy cluster – a gravitationally bound collection of galaxies. This location is significant, as it suggests the ORC’s formation might potentially be linked to interactions between the surrounding plasma and a galaxy’s jet, a powerful stream of particles ejected from a supermassive black hole.
One prevailing theory posits that the black hole jet initially created the magnetized plasma clouds. A subsequent, massive explosion near the galactic center then re-energized these clouds, causing them to radiate brightly as radio rings. This process,according to the research,could explain the observed double-ring structure.
“These discoveries show that ORCs and radio rings are not isolated curiosities – they are part of a broader family of exotic plasma structures shaped by black hole jets, winds, and their environments,” stated a coauthor, an assistant professor in the astrophysics division of the National Centre For nuclear Research in Warsaw, Poland.
The discovery of ORCs is part of a broader trend in astrophysics. astronomers are increasingly uncovering a previously hidden “low-surface brightness universe” thanks to the advent of more powerful radio telescopes. These instruments are capable of detecting faint signals that were previously undetectable, revealing a wealth of previously unknown cosmic phenomena.
Alongside ORCs, researchers are also observing other peculiar objects, including a remarkably round supernova remnant and Wolf-Rayet stars – intensely luminous, short-lived stellar objects. these discoveries are reshaping our understanding of the universe and the complex processes that govern its evolution.
