Like Giddey, Daniels also came close to achieving a triple-double, recording eight points, nine rebounds, nine assists, and two steals. Jalen Johnson delivered a dominant performance for the Hawks with 36 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists, while Young contributed 35 points, seven three-pointers, and nine assists in his second game back from a 22-game absence due to a knee injury.
Though, these strong individual performances weren’t enough to prevent the Hawks from suffering their third consecutive loss, dropping their overall record to 15-15.Their recent form has been concerning,with only two wins in their last nine contests.
Clutch plays Down the Stretch
With the game tightly contested in the fourth quarter, Giddey hit a critical three-pointer with 1:11 remaining, giving Chicago a 146-142 lead. Coby White then extended the lead to 149-142 with a pair of free throws with 48 seconds on the clock.
Atlanta responded with back-to-back three-pointers from Young and Johnson,narrowing the gap to 151-150 with 5.9 seconds left.Buzelis was then fouled, splitting a pair of free throws, giving the Hawks one last prospect.
Controversial Final Play
Young’s final attempt, a 16-foot pull-up floater, missed the mark as he appeared to be attempting to draw a foul against Tre jones and Giddey. The play sparked debate, with Chicago commentators suggesting the referee made the correct call. “Had he went up and shot the ball normally, he probably had a better chance to make it.but he was trying to sell a foul,” one commentator noted. Another added, “It felt like justice that it didn’t get called.”
Giddey described the defensive strategy on the final play: “We knew they were going to go to trae, Trae or Jalen. We talked about how we were going to cover it in the timeout. Me and Tre came together with the big and we ran it. He tried to draw and foul and I tried to stay away from him and make him make a tough shot. Tip your hat if he makes a running floater fading away from the rim from 17 feet. I’m glad we were able to get the stop and close this game out.”
The Bulls and Hawks will rematch in Atlanta on Wednesday.
