Streamer aims to capture European audiences with local dramas, thrillers, and docuseries, including projects from the creators of “Dark.”
HBO Max is aggressively expanding its international footprint, launching in Italy and Germany on January 13 and bolstering its content library with a wave of locally produced original series. Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of HBO Max, unveiled the ambitious plans on Wednesday, signaling a commitment to attracting subscribers with culturally relevant programming.
German Originals Lead the Charge
Germany will be a key focus for new content. Viewers can anticipate “4 Blocks Zero,” a prequel to the award-winning gangster drama “4 Blocks,” and “Banksters,” a heist drama inspired by a true story. Both series are being produced by W&B Television. A documentary focusing on a daring past crime is also in development. According to a company release, the Beetz brothers are creating a film about the 2016 theft of the “Big Maple Leaf” gold coin from Berlin’s Bode Museum – one of the most spectacular robberies in German history.
But the most anticipated German offering may be a new thriller series from the creators of Netflix’s critically acclaimed “Dark.” Jantje Friese and Baran Bo Odar, known for their work on “Dark” and “1899,” will bring the unsettling tales of “Struwwelpeter” to life. “Struwwelpeter,” or “Shockheaded Peter,” is a collection of cautionary children’s stories written in 1845 by German psychiatrist Heinrich Hoffmann. The stories, known for their often-gruesome depictions of misbehavior, have long been a source of childhood fear in German-speaking countries. The streamer unveiled the project without providing further details, leaving fans eager for more information.
Italian originals Tackle True Crime and Political Intrigue
HBO Max’s Italian launch will be accompanied by a compelling lineup of original productions. One standout is a drama that revisits the 2011 murder of melania Rea, portrayed by Maria Esposito. The series promises to expose “the fractures of a family, a community and the Italian justice system under relentless media scrutiny.”
Premiering on February 20 will be “Portobello,” starring Fabrizio Gifuni, which marks HBO Max’s first Italian original. Directed by Marco Bellocchio, the series chronicles the fight of Italian TV host Enzo Tortora to clear his name.
Docuseries Explore Compelling Human Stories
Beyond scripted series, HBO Max is investing in a robust slate of docuseries. “Gina Lollobrigida: diva Contesa” will delve into the life and legacy of the iconic Italian actress, examining “the battle over the legacy of a cinema icon and an intense family melodrama.”
Another upcoming docuseries, “Saman,” will tell the heartbreaking story of a young Pakistani woman who was murdered by her family for refusing an arranged marriage – a poignant exploration of the struggle for freedom.
These new original series represent a significant investment in local content, positioning HBO Max to compete effectively in the European stream
