Jonas Vingegaard signaled his intentions for the remainder of the race on a punishing day in the mountains, claiming a commanding victory on Stage 9 of the Giro d’Italia 2026. The Dane, riding in the blue mountains classification jersey, used a decisive late attack on the final ascent to Corno alle Scale to signal that the gap to the pink jersey is no longer a safe distance.
While Afonso Eulálio of Bahrain Victorious successfully defended his lead to carry the maglia rosa into the first rest day, the margin of his advantage has been significantly eroded. Vingegaard’s performance on this summit finish serves as a stern warning to the leader ahead of Tuesday’s critical individual time trial.
A decisive ascent at Corno alle Scale
The stage, which featured the grueling Querciola climb followed by the 10.8km ascent of Corno alle Scale, was characterized by high tension and tactical maneuvering. An early breakaway including Giulio Ciccone, Diego Ulissi, and Toon Aerts attempted to disrupt the rhythm of the peloton, but the strength of the chasing group, led by Decathlon-CMA CGM and Visma-Lease a Bike, eventually neutralized the move.
As the race entered the final kilometers, the intensity reached a breaking point. With approximately 3km remaining on the steepest gradients of the Corno alle Scale, Vingegaard launched a powerful acceleration that immediately distanced Felix Gall of Decathlon-CMA CGM. The Dane appeared to have an extra gear, riding with a clinical precision that left his primary rivals struggling to respond.
Gall, who had been riding strongly to limit his losses, finished second, just 12 seconds behind Vingegaard. Behind them, the battle for the remaining podium spots was equally fierce. Davide Piganzoli of Visma-Lease a Bike surged forward to secure third place, while Eulálio managed to limit his damage to 40 seconds, ensuring his hold on the overall lead remained intact for now.
The day was a significant setback for Giulio Pellizzari. The young Italian, once a major protagonist in the opening week, struggled on the final gradients and finished 1’27” behind Vingegaard, causing him to slip down the general classification standings.
The General Classification landscape
The results of Stage 9 have significantly reshaped the top of the leaderboard. While Eulálio remains the man to beat, the hierarchy of the race is becoming increasingly volatile. The gap between the top three riders is now less than 35 seconds, a margin that could evaporate quickly in the upcoming stages.

Further down the standings, Thymen Arensman of Netcompany-Ineos sits in sixth place at 5’00”, followed closely by Matya Rondel. The top ten is rounded out by Ben O’Connor, Giulio Pellizzari, and Michael Storer.
Classification updates and the road to the time trial
Beyond the battle for the pink jersey, several other classifications saw significant movement. Jonas Vingegaard has firmly established his dominance in the mountains, securing the blue jersey with a 51-point lead over Diego Pablo Sevilla. This means the Dane will wear the mountains classification skinsuit during Tuesday’s time trial, regardless of his tactical preferences.
The white jersey for the best-placed young rider also remains with Afonso Eulálio, though the secondary classification saw a shift in the standings. Following Pellizzari’s drop in the rankings, Matya Rondel has moved into second place in the white jersey competition, a significant milestone for the Frenchman and his Swiss-based team.
In the points classification, Paul Magnier continues a superb run. The Frenchman maintains the purple jersey with 130 points, holding a 44-point buffer over Jhonatan Narvaez after a consistent first week of racing.
