The Banyolí JN Santaeulàlia premiered the ‘Narratives’ collection in the spring of 2021 with the book 2017. Diary of a turbulent year. Now, two years later, it publishes A train journey. From Shanghai to Saint Petersburgthe ninth volume of the collection.
through the pages ofA train journey they parade landscapes and cities of China, Mongolia, the immense Siberia and European Russia. Some countries that the author stepped on while traveling by train between Shanghai and Saint Petersburg, some years ago. Then came the slow work of transforming the travel notes into prose that is attractive to the reader, detailed, precise and with touches of irony here and there. The writing of the book was not completed until the year 2022. In addition to describing the places he sees from the train or on foot, and some historical and cultural reference, Santaeulàlia has tried to fill the book with people of today, with men and women he meets along the way and who tell him memories, anecdotes, various reflections…
A travel book without the voice of the people who live in the places visited would be a lifeless and sterile work. For this reason, an essential part of this work are the conversations with people that Santaeulàlia met on the train – on the trains – along the way or during his stops in Shanghai, Hangzhou, Xi’an, Beijing, Irkutsk, Lake Baikal, Krasnoyarsk, Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Moscow and Saint Petersburg.
