Finding Strength in Suffering: Oklahoma Leader Discovers New Path After Life-Altering Accident

As Thanksgiving approaches, many grapple with finding gratitude amidst personal hardship. But one Oklahoma faith leader is sharing a powerful story of resilience and rediscovery, demonstrating how even profound loss can be met with unexpected hope and opportunity.

The journey began with a severe car accident that resulted in a life-altering physical challenge. “There are a number of things I grieve that I will never do again or do so in a limited capacity,” shared the Oklahoma Baptists Executive Director-Treasurer. The most significant loss, he admits, was the prospect of running, a passion that extended beyond mere exercise.

The Loss of a Runner’s Life

For this leader, running was more than physical activity; it was a vital source of stress relief and a framework for personal goal-setting. He was actively training for the Tulsa half marathon when the accident occurred, a goal now tragically out of reach. “It was a hard pill to swallow, losing this part of my life,” he confessed. The structured benchmarks and achievements inherent in marathon training provided a sense of purpose that was deeply missed.

Did you know?– Handcycling is a growing adaptive sport allowing athletes with disabilities to compete in marathons and other races using a hand-crank bicycle.

A New Horizon: Discovering Handcycling

Unexpectedly, friends within the running community introduced a new possibility: the hand crank division in marathons. Initially unfamiliar with this adaptive sport, he learned that athletes with disabilities participate in marathons using handcycles – a revelation that sparked a flicker of hope. “I knew people participated in wheelchairs in marathons, but I didn’t even know handcycles existed,” he explained.

A recent social media connection led him to Randy McCown,an Oklahoma pastor with a long history of spinal cord injury and extensive experience with handcycling. The two connected, and a meeting with McCown and his wife proved transformative. “we had a wonderful visit not just about the handcycle, but life and ministry as well,” he recalled.

Pro tip:– When facing setbacks, actively seek out communities centered around adaptive sports or hobbies. They offer support, resources, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Rediscovering Goals and Community

The encounter ignited a renewed sense of possibility. He now looks forward to exploring handcycling as a means of returning to the world of marathons and goal-setting. “I think this is something I will really be interested in,” he stated, expressing optimism about this new chapter. The experience underscored the power of community and the unexpected ways God can provide. “we left meeting the mccowns in awe of how God, in the midst of a very difficult season for us, showed us His goodness and kindness and redeemed something bad for something good. Plus, we walked away with two new friends!”

A message of Hope and Faith

This personal journey serves as a powerful message for anyone navigating difficult times. “If you’re walking through a tough time right now, stay faithful to God,” he encourages. Acknowledging the difficulty of maintaining faith during hardship, he emphasizes the importance of clinging to the goodness of god, trusting in His providential plan, and maintaining an eternal viewpoint. “If you will not lose sight of the goodness of God…I am confident you will be greatly encouraged at how God is using your situation and giving you glimpses of His love and care.”

He concludes with a reminder
