Cross-Cultural Support
The local Maori community also participated in the remembrance, performing the Haka in honor of Chazz, who was a member of their community. This gesture underscored the strong bonds between the two cultures. Gooreng Gooreng elder Aunty Juliri Ingra,Jordana’s cultural grandmother, expressed her family’s gratitude for the overwhelming support.
“I just want to thank all the community of gladstone, or Yallarm as we call it, for being here for us and our family as we mourn our loved ones,” she said. “Since it happened, I could see the love coming through from our community.”
Aunty Juliri described Jordana as a “proud gooreng Gooreng girl,” adding, “we will never forget her as part of our family. And Jordan and little Chazz. We are all connected up with the Maori community also. There is so much love going back and forth between us.”
Families Describe a Profound Loss
The families of the victims released a joint statement, describing chazz and Jordan’s friendship as one where they treated each other “like brothers.” They added, “Our lives, and all those that loved and knew Jordana, Jordan and Chazz are forever changed.” Ms. Johnson was remembered as a loving and devoted mother who consistently went above and beyond to help others.
