NMU Swimming & Diving Maintains Second Place at GLIAC Championships

Northern Michigan University’s swim and dive team concluded day two of the GLIAC Championships holding steady in second place, trailing Grand Valley State University. The Wildcats amassed 336 points, positioning them behind GVSU’s leading 530 points. Wayne State (256), Davenport (211), and Saginaw Valley State University (188) rounded out the top five teams.

Wildcats Secure Bronze in 400 Medley Relay

The ‘Cats earned their lone medal of the day in the 400 medley relay, with the team of Evangeline Pierce, Evie DeCarlo, Pauline Izydorek, and Laura Stockinger claiming bronze. This marks the fourth medal of the championships for Stockinger, a standout performer for NMU.

Individual Performances Highlight Day Two

Several Wildcats delivered strong individual performances throughout the day. Pauline Izydorek finished fourth in the 100 fly with a time of 56.75, while Phineas Schneider placed sixth at 57.05. In the 200 free, Carlotta Santi finished fourth (1:52.12) and Annika Geyer seventh (1:53.58).

The diving team also showcased its talent, with Kalina Ceglinski and Grace Daly finishing fourth and fifth, respectively, on the 3-meter board. Ceglinski narrowly missed a silver medal, falling short by less than three points.

Detailed Race Breakdown

The evening began with strong showings in the 100 fly. Sophia Moore won the B final with a time of 56.86, followed by Laura Stockinger in fifth at 58.15. In the A final, Izydorek and Schneider competed, ultimately finishing fourth and sixth with times of 56.75 and 57.05, respectively.

Nadia Blackmore, Evie DeCarlo, and Manuela Araujo dominated the B final of the 400 IM, securing second, third, and sixth place with times of 4:30.69, 4:32.50, and 4:38.38, respectively. The 200 free saw a strong presence from NMU, with Abby Keen, Ellie Kilgard, Caitlin Aarseth, and Joanne Arbic finishing fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh in the B final. Santi and Geyer competed in the A final, finishing fourth and seventh, respectively.

Josie Bossen finished seventh in the B final of the 3-meter earlier in the day. Ceglinski’s near-podium finish in the A final underscored the team’s diving prowess, with Daly close behind in fifth. The 400 medley relay team secured bronze, finishing just 0.17 seconds behind the leaders and beating fourth place by two body lengths with a time of 3:46.63.

Looking Ahead to Day Three

The NMU swim and dive team will return to action tomorrow for day three of the GLIAC Championships. The schedule features the 500 Freestyle, 100 Backstroke, 100 Breaststroke, 200 Butterfly, and 800 Freestyle Relay. Prelims are set to begin at 10 a.m. ET, with finals at 5:30 p.m. ET.
