In Europe, the poor carbon balance can be explained in particular by the increased use, due to the energy crisis, of coal-fired power stations. Here, that of Scholven, in Germany. Jochen Tack/Imago/ABACA

INFOGRAPHIC – Falling releases in China and the EU cannot compensate for increases in other countries, such as the United States and India.

The 2022 report of the Global Carbon Project, carried out by more than 100 scientists from 80 research institutes, almost sounds like an admission of failure. According to them, global emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), the main greenhouse gas linked to human activities, is expected to increase by 1% this year, to 40.6 billion tonnes. Even if this is not a new record (comparable to 40.9 billion tonnes in 2019, before the Covid crisis), at the current rate, emissions will exceed in nine years the threshold which would have made it possible to limit warming to 1.5°C, the most ambitious goal of the Paris climate agreement, reached in 2015. “It’s only a 50% chance”warns Philippe Ciais, CEA researcher at the Laboratory of Climate and Environmental Sciences and one of the co-authors of the article published in the journal Earth System Science Data. The warming could be weaker, or, conversely, the climate machine could get carried away due to effects…
