Global Democracy Rankings: Somalia at the Bottom, Only Eight Countries Improve

Somalia is at the bottom of the list. Also, two-thirds of the 180 countries scored below 50 in the report.

Only eight countries improved their rankings, including Ireland, South Korea, Maldives and Vietnam.

Even top-scoring democracies like Iceland, the Netherlands and Sweden last year have slipped in this year’s rankings. Countries considered more authoritarian, such as Iran, Russia, and Venezuela, have also lost their scores. 23 countries have fallen to the lowest level in the Global Ranking Index.
