Around the world every year about 120 million pregnancies are unplanned and 60% of them end in abortion; very high figures, from a report published this Wednesday, March 30, by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

One in two pregnancies is unintended, the report finds. In particular: poverty, low level of education, inequality between men and women, exposure to violence or coercion. Factors that reduce the ability of women to make choices, to request and obtain contraceptives, to negotiate the use of condoms with their partner ».

It should be noted that nearly 260 million women wishing to avoid pregnancy do not use modern and safe contraceptive methods, such as the pill or the IUD; the fear of side effects, or the fear of being stigmatized, or even the opposition of those around them are among the obstacles, alongside sometimes in certain areas a difficulty of access to contraception.

Six out of ten unplanned pregnancies therefore end in abortion. In developing countries, they are generally practiced in poor conditions. In Latin America and Africa, three-quarters of abortions are unsafe; consequence for the woman: a risk of short or long-term complications, sometimes fatal.
