Cotswolds Fire Tragedy: Police Officer’s Family Lost in Boxing Day Blaze

A devastating house fire in the cotswolds claimed the lives of a woman and two children on Boxing Day, as a serving police officer desperately attempted a rescue. The incident,which occurred in the early hours of december 26th,has left the Brimscombe Hill area of Stroud in mourning and prompted an investigation,though authorities currently believe the fire was a tragic accident.
Desperate Rescue Attempt
The fire erupted at a mid-terrace cottage, waking the mother and father.According to Det Supt Ian Fletcher of Gloucestershire police, the couple “attempted to get to their children in the back bedroom,” but were quickly overwhelmed by the intensity of the flames.The father, demonstrating extraordinary courage, broke free from the property through a bathroom window, hoping to reach his children’s bedroom from the outside.
“He’s been unable to enter via that bedroom window,” Fletcher explained during a press conference. Undeterred, the officer then tried to re-enter through the same bathroom window, but the fire had spread, blocking his path. He subsequently attempted to force entry through the front and back doors, all to no avail. By this point, emergency services had arrived and begun battling the blaze.
The man received treatment at a hospital. authorities believe the fire originated on the ground floor and rapidly ascended, ultimately causing the roof to collapse.
Ongoing Search and Recovery
Tragically, the body of the mother has been recovered from the scene. One child’s body has also been found within the cottage, while the search for the second child – a seven-year-old girl and a four-year-old boy – continues. It remains unknown which child has been located. An urban search and rescue team from Avon fire and rescue service is assisting in the recovery efforts.
“Fire crews had ‘tried their hardest’ to get into the house to rescue the family,” stated Gloucestershire’s deputy chief fire officer, Nathaniel Hooton.
Community Grief and Investigation
The family, whose identities have not been released, were described as “popular and much loved” within the local community.Chloe Turner, the leader of Stroud district council, conveyed the deep sorrow felt throughout the area, stating, “The family are known and loved locally.”
Gloucestershire police are not treating the fire as suspicious at this time. “We’ve had multiple witnesses describe the anguish that he was going through, his inability to get in and save his children and save his wife,” Fletcher said, acknowledging the profound emotional toll on the officer. He added that the officer is cooperating fully with the investigation.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to determine the precise cause of the fire and piece together the events of that tragic Boxing Day morning.
