Goa Nightclub Fire Kills 25, Sparking Safety Crackdown

A devastating fire at a nightclub in Panaji, Goa, has shaken the nation, claiming the lives of 25 people and prompting swift action from authorities. Preliminary investigations suggest electric firecrackers may have been the initial cause of the blaze at the Birch By Romeo Lane nightclub.

The tragedy, which unfolded late Saturday night around 11:45 PM, resulted in deaths attributed to suffocation. Authorities have already taken four members of the club’s staff into custody, and a wider investigation is underway.

Arrests and FIRs Filed in Wake of Disaster

According to reports, police have detained the club’s Chief General Manager, Rajiv Modak, General Manager Vivek Singh, Bar Manager Rajiv Singhania, and Gate Manager Rianshu Thakur. All four face accusations of negligence and violations of safety regulations. Furthermore, a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against the club owners, Saurabh Loothra and Gaurav Loothra.

“The owner will be arrested soon,” a senior official stated, emphasizing the commitment to a thorough investigation. The state’s Director General of Police, Alok Kumar, has been instructed to pursue the case without compromise. In a move signaling zero tolerance for regulatory lapses, officials confirmed that any government personnel found to have permitted the club to operate despite safety violations will be immediately suspended.

Special Committee Formed to Investigate

The state government has established a special committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire. The committee comprises the South Goa Collector, the Deputy Director of Fire and Emergency Services, and the Director of the Forensic Laboratory. They are tasked with identifying the responsible parties and recommending immediate corrective actions.

The committee is expected to submit its report within one week. “The government will ensure that such incidents do not happen again,” a spokesperson affirmed.

Stricter Regulations for Nightclubs on the Horizon

In response to the tragedy, authorities are preparing to issue a strict advisory for all nightclubs and crowded venues across the state. The new regulations will mandate robust safety measures and require comprehensive audits of establishments operating without proper permits. This includes a thorough review of existing fire safety protocols and emergency evacuation plans.

Compensation for Victims’ Families

The Chief Minister has announced financial assistance for those affected by the disaster. Each immediate family member of the deceased will receive 5 lakh rupees, while injured individuals will receive 50,000 rupees from the State Disaster Management Authority Fund. The government will also cover the costs of transporting the bodies of the deceased back to their homes.
