Golkar Silent on PMI Split Between JK and Agung

by Laura Richards – Editor-in-Chief

A power struggle has erupted within the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) as two prominent figures, Jusuf Kalla and Agung Laksono, both vying for the top position.

Jusuf Kalla, a former Vice President and Golkar party politician, declared himself the sole candidate for PMI Chairman during the organization’s 22nd National Congress. He claimed to have received overwhelming support and was elected through acclamation.

However, Agung Laksono, another influential Golkar member, disputed the results. He organized a separate, parallel congress, alleging a lack of due process and claiming he held the majority of support from regional branches. This resulted in a dramatic split within the organization, with each side asserting legitimacy and contesting the other’s claim.

Agung Laksono swiftly submitted the results of his parallel congress to the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, seeking formal recognition as the rightful PMI leadership for the 2024-2029 term.

Meanwhile, Jusuf Kalla’s camp countered the challenge, dismissing those who sided with Agung and pushing forward with their leadership.

The situation is further complicated by the personal connections and political allegiances of those involved. Both Kalla and Laksono have strong ties within the Golkar party and have asserted the backing of influential figures within the government.

This dualism grips the PMI, leaving its future uncertain. The ensuing legal battle and potential government intervention in settling the dispute will determine which faction ultimately governs this critical humanitarian organization.
